Curriculum
Instructional objectives are designed to incorporate
higher-level thinking skills, use of scientific
thinking skills, implementation of tools and
technology, and processes of assessment. The
curriculum is regularly reviewed and revised
in light of research and educational innovations.
In all subjects, the Gospel values and social
justice principles are infused. Attention is
also given to subject areas such as substance
abuse, communicable diseases, human development,
and multi-cultural education as appropriately
addressed in a variety of subject areas.
St. Stanislaus Kostka School
strives to develop and deepen in students a
sense of pride in the accomplishments of the
past as well as enable the students to move
into the future with success in knowing the
contributions of their particular ethnic group.
St. Stanislaus Kostka School
remains committed to the fact that we do not
live in isolation from our brothers and sisters
who share our world. We celebrate many cultures
during the school year hoping to develop the
awareness and appreciation of peoples of all
ethnic origins, creeds, and cultures.
Homework
Students are assigned homework every school
night. Assignments may include studying a subject
rather than a written assignment. Parents are
asked to check their student’s homework
to make certain it is done neatly, completely,
and accurately. It is expected that students
will inquire about missed work due to an absence.
If a child will be out of school for an extended
time, parents should contact the teacher to
arrange for the assignments. Homework is not
to be completed in school.
Parents are expected to take
an interest in their children’s homework
by giving encouragement and by providing conditions
that are conducive to study. Students need,
at times, someone to drill math facts, spelling
words, and reading vocabulary. On the average,
a student should have the following amount of
homework per night:
- Junior High Students 90 to 120 minutes
- Intermediate Grades 60 to 90 minutes
- Primary Grades 30 to 45 minutes
Library books should be a student’s
constant companion. Normally, students are exempt
from homework on weekends and holidays.
Students should have book bags
to protect books and papers that they take home
for homework assignments. Students are responsible
for the condition of the books that they rent
from the school and are required to pay for
lost or damaged books.
Evaluation
Grades are based upon participation and performance
in class, completion of assigned work and testing.
St. Stanislaus Kostka School uses the following
letter grades:
A = Outstanding
B = Very Good
C = Average
D = Below Average
U = Unsatisfactory
Report
Cards
Students receive report cards. Report card grades
become part of the student’s academic
file.
Parent-Teacher
Conferences
Conferences are held twice yearly, following
the first and third quarters. It is recommended
that each student be present for these conferences.
The second conference may be considered optional;
one requested by either the teacher or the parent/guardian.
Parents are informed by the end of January if
there is a question of a student being retained.
The principal makes the final decision in this
matter.
If the need arises, a parent
or teacher may call for a conference at any
time during the school year. To contact the
teacher, a parent must call the office. The
teacher will be notified to call the parent/guardian
as soon as possible.
Achievement
Testing
The Terra Nova Tests are administered annually
in March. Test results are distributed as soon
as they are available. Parents are encouraged
to retain these results for future reference.
Graduation
An eighth grade student must have completed
all school requirements for graduation in order
to be issued a St. Stanislaus Kostka School
diploma. These requirements include:
- All required assignments are completed;
- U.S. and Illinois Constitution tests have
been passed;
- All required fees and fines are settled;
